Millions of women around the world feel pressure to achieve things like getting married or having children by a certain age. Girls are born into this world and are encouraged to dream big and you can accomplish whatever you put your mind to… but hurry up and do it by thirty because you have to get married and have kids.
I’m literally asked, ‘When are you and Jose going to start a family?’ all the time and often by people I barely know. This really bugs me because it always catches me off guard. I’ve been asked in a group setting at parties and even at work-related events. I often walk away asking myself, how is that an appropriate question to ask just because I’m 30? The crazy part is, after ‘the question’ comes the judgment and a slew of reasons why we should leave downtown and start a family in the suburbs because it’s time.
The rational side of my brain knows that people are just curious about our life plan because I’ve hit a certain age, but please don’t make me feel selfish and guilty for not being quite ready to create and add another human to the planet right this second. There are other exciting things going on in my life that I would love to chat about if you’re genuinely interested in how I am and what’s going on in my life.
In Asia, only 2 out of 10 women feel comfortable with the idea of getting older according to a new study by skincare brand, SK-II. The reasons are many – pressure from family and friends, society’s scrutiny or feeling the burden to marry before an artificially created deadline is up.
